This course has been drafted specifically for those individuals who have already taken a Breath Alcohol Technician course in accordance with state or federal law (49 CFR Part 40.213) within the last five years and now need only complete training on the Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0 or Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0BT evidential breath testing device proficiency training. This training is also required if a technician previously received device proficiency training on a different device and now will be utilizing the Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0 or Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0BT for breath alcohol testing.

This course will cover all aspects of the operation, maintenance, and calibration checks necessary to utilize the device on a regular basis in accordance with the manufacturer’s Quality Assurance Plan as required by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for all evidential breath testing devices (EBTs).

Students who need both device training and breath alcohol technician training or breath alcohol technician refresher training using the Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0 or Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0BT should take the DOT Breath Alcohol Technician Course which includes all components of training including this device proficiency training as required in the 49 CFR Part 40.213.

This course includes both informal and formal assessment techniques including quantitative and qualitative strategies. Course exams utilizing a number of random questions taken from a larger question pool assess the understanding of key terms and concepts within the curriculum while the mock demonstrations (mocks) provide a summative and qualitative assessment through demonstrations designed to assess students’ preparedness for a variety of real-world scenarios.

  • The Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0 or Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0BT evidential breath testing device;
  • At least 15 sealed mouthpieces for the Phoenix 6.0;
  • At least 10 Alcohol Testing Forms;
  • A source of alcohol for false positive tests (alcohol-based mouthwash);
  • Unexpired dry gas cylinder for EBT calibration and calibration checks;
  • Tamper-evident tape or tamper-evident adhesive printout paper; and
  • Access to a computer with a webcam and reliable internet access.
