Refresher Training For DOT Drug Testing Collection

Drug test collectors are essential professionals to the Department of Transportation. DOT employees work with the public on a daily basis and often operate large vehicles that can only be entrusted to those who are operating with sober minds. The importance of this work is why DOT employees enjoy such great job security. It’s also why they must go through refresher training long after they’ve been permitted to work.

Rule 49 CFR Part 40 Section 40.33

To qualify and be permitted to work as a drug test collector for the Department of Transportation, you must follow all of the requirements outlined by DOT Rule 49 CFR Part 40 Section 40.33. Specifically, this means you undergo refresher training. This extra form of training is designed to make sure that drug test collectors are constantly meeting the standards dictated by the role and this important department. If an employee foregoes this training, they will find themselves no longer qualified to hold their position.

When Refresher Training Must Be Taken

Refresher training must be done by the worker within five years after the date they completed their original training. Going forward, they must continue to complete this training every five years.

The Requirements of DOT Drug Test Collector Refresher Training

For the most part, DOT drug test collector refresher training is going to entail the same requirements that your initial training did. This means first covering the steps required to complete a drug test collection successfully.

The refresher training courses will also go over the process of completing the CCF (Custody and Control Form) and successfully transmitting them, and Workers must prove they can handle adverse situations too like dealing with problem testers (e.g. someone with a shy bladder or who is trying to tamper with their specimen, etc.). Other situations they must be proficient in dealing with would include how to fix issues that occur during a collection and those that would be considered fatal flaws.

Finally, the refresher course will involve five mock collections. You will need to get through each without any mistakes. These scenarios will be:

  • 2 normal collections
  • 1 collection with an inadequate amount of urine
  • 1 collection where the temperature is out-of-range
  • 1 incident where the person refuses to sign the CCF and/or put their initials on the specimen bottles tamper-evident seal
All of these tests will be carried out under supervision. The supervisor must complete and submit an evaluation that verifies you passed all the tests without any errors.

Stay Current on Any Changes to DOT Rule 49 CFR Part 40 Section 40.33

As important as DOT Rule 49 CFR Part 40 Section 40.33 is, it’s subject to change and may be revised during the five-year period between you going through refresher training. Therefore, it’s important that you stay up-to-date on these changes as they’ll be part of your tests.

Understanding the demands of your job as a DOT drug test collector through refresher training will not only ensure you are doing it correctly but that you continue enjoying employment for years to come. After looking at the competition I was very impressed with the website and how easy it was to begin a course. I had a few questions, and when I called I was delighted to talk to Andrew who was very friendly, helpful and even provided me with some good ideas on how to start my drug testing business!
